You’ve locked in a date for your birthday party and now, you need to invite your guests. You want to send something a little more personal, and a little more thoughtful, than just blasting out a mass text. Enter: the good ol’ birthday invitation. But what should you write on it?
Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here’s our guide to writing birthday invitations, plus a few examples to get you inspired.

What should a birthday invitation include?
First things first: what actually goes inside a birthday party invitation? These are the key sections:
Your name (or the guest of honour)
Include the name of whoever the party is for—whether it’s for yourself, your child, or whoever else—at the top of the invite.
Usually you’ll also include the age they’ll be turning.
Time and location
The essential details. Let your guests know what time to arrive and when the festivities will wrap up. Don’t forget to include the date.
If there’s any special instructions they need to access the venue—for example, that it’s on the first floor or if they’ll need to use an access code to get in—be sure to add these too.
Food
Will there be food served at your party? It’s helpful for guests to know this. You don’t want them to arrive on a full stomach, so they can’t enjoy the lovely spread you’ve put on. Or worse: arriving hungry and staying that way.
Let your guests know what you’re going to be providing: a meal, snacks, or neither.
Drinks
You should also tell your guests if your party is BYOB. This would likely only apply if you were hosting your party at home. At a venue, you would probably either have an open bar or have guests pay as they go.
How to RSVP
This is important: tell your guests how they can RSVP and when they should do this by.
Theme/dress code
If you’re throwing a theme party or there’s a certain dress code you want your guests to follow, now’s the time to tell them. For example, if you’ve hired a formal venue and want your guests to dress smart.
Gifts
Here, you only need to mention gifts if you’d prefer not to receive them. “No gifts, please” or “Your presence is already enough of a gift” both work just fine.
Extras
Some other bits you might choose to include are:
- If it’s a surprise party
- Parking information
- How to get there (i.e. “5 mins walk from Hammersmith tube”)
- If plus-ones are allowed, such as partners
- If the party will be indoors or outdoors
- If there’s any special activities you’ll be doing, i.e. escape room, games

Now, onto the examples. If you’re throwing a party for a child, you might choose to use more playful language.
